Head Shot Photographs: The Dos & Don’ts

Head Shot Photographs: The Dos & Don’tsMeant to capture a glimpse of your innate spirit and energy in one gorgeous picture, a headshot can make or break your chances at being called back for an audition, being contacted by an employer or just looking good in a professional style.

So, needless to say, having your headshot taken for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience.

But, there are some ways you can control those nerves and push the scales in your favor. Humza Studio offers some special information on what you should and shouldn’t do for your headshot photography, so you can look good and feel good about your headshot photographs!

The Do’s of Headshot Photography

  • Do practice posing in front of a mirror beforehand so you know which profile looks best.
  • Do talk to your photographer about different directions and angles. You’d be surprised at how different angles represent your look the best.
  • Do be open about your profile shots. If your right profile is the most favorable one, sticking to it might just make your photos come off as boring and similar.
  • Do wear solid clothing instead of patterns. You don’t want to take the attention away from yourself.
  • Do dress appropriately. T-shirts and loose clothing are a no-no. Dress as you would for an audition or a job interview.
  • Do smile. You’ll look friendly, relaxed and more welcoming.
  • Do wear glasses if you wear them regularly.  People will be able to recognize you more easily if you’re prone to wearing prescription glasses. Just be sure to give them a thorough cleaning. And push them up the bridge of your nose. You don’t want them to block your eye line.
  • Do wear simple makeup. Sprucing up your look is fine, but excessive makeup or an extravagant up-do will be quite off-putting for the camera.

The Don’ts of Headshot Photography

  • Don’t wear any clothing with logos or wording of any kind.
  • Don’t wear any style of clothing you’re uncomfortable in.
  • Don’t glamorize your shots if that’s not your style.
  • Don’t print your resume on the back of your headshot
  • Don’t be overly creative when posing.  A simple pose works best if you want to look direct and professional.
  • Don’t take headshots yourself. Selfies might suit your social media profile, but they’ll definitely come off as immature and unprofessional if you choose a selfie headshot.
